Trump insults Harris, makes false claims, quarrels with Black journalists at conference

August 1, 2024

Trump and Black journalists

Republican presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump is questioned by journalists at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. The event was moderated by, from left, Rachel Scott, senior congressional correspondent for ABC News; Kadia Goba, politics reporter at Semafor; and Harris Faulkner, anchor of The Faulkner Focus and co-host of Outnumbered on Fox News. (Photo by William J. Ford/Maryland Matters)

CHICAGO — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Wednesday underwent questioning from a National Association of Black Journalists panel in a turbulent session during which he falsely claimed Vice President Kamala Harris “happened to turn Black” during her political career.

Through the roughly 35-minute combative event, the former president rarely answered questions, lied and exaggerated, attacked Harris, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, and criticized one of the Black journalists interviewing him, ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott.

“I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit,” Trump said. “I love the Black population of this country.”

The discussion was also moderated by Kadia Goba, a politics reporter at Semafor, and Harris Faulkner, a Fox News anchor.

Many NABJ members strongly opposed Trump’s visit, especially given his treatment of high-profile Black women journalists, and the announcement of his appearance sparked a major backlash. Members were also critical about the lack of transparency around the invitation to Trump and the inclusion of a moderator from the conservative Fox network.

Trump attacked ABC’s Scott and called her questions “rude” and her media outlet a “fake news network.”

Scott asked Trump why Black voters should trust him, especially after Trump has made false claims that political rivals such as former President Barack Obama were not born in the United States, has dined with a white supremacist at his Florida residence and has slammed Black journalists.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner,” Trump said.

Scott pressed Trump about Republican members of Congress who have referred to Harris, who is the first Black woman and woman of Asian American descent to serve as vice president, as a so-called DEI hire. She asked if that was acceptable language.

Trump didn’t answer the question and asked Scott to define DEI, which she said stood for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Trump then questioned whether Harris was Black.

“I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said. “So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

Harris attended Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., a historic Black sorority. Her father is Jamaican, and her late mother was an Indian immigrant.

Harris in Houston

Harris, who was endorsed by President Joe Biden after he bowed out of a reelection campaign, was invited by NABJ to take questions as well, but her confirmation is pending, the organization said. She was traveling Wednesday to Houston for events including a campaign stop.

NABJ President Kenneth Lemon said that the organization is working on a virtual session with Harris in September.

On Trump’s participation in the panel, Harris campaign Black Media Director Jasmine Harris, who is not related to the vice president, said in a statement, “Let’s remember exactly who this man is.”

“Not only does Donald Trump have a history of demeaning NABJ members and honorees who remain pillars of the Black press, he also has a history of attacking the media and working against the vital role the press play in our democracy,” she said.

Harris campaign Communications Director Michael Tyler said in a statement that Trump’s behavior during the interview was hostile.

“Trump lobbed personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he did throughout his presidency – while he failed Black families and left the entire country digging out of the ditch he left us in,” Tyler said. “Donald Trump has already proven he cannot unite America, so he attempts to divide us.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, asked at the White House press briefing about Trump’s visit to the convention, said, “That’s a campaign stop for him.”

The Trump campaign has used the invitation to argue that the former president has grown support among Black voters. Before Biden suspended his campaign in mid-July, a majority of Black voters aligned with voting for Biden, about 77%, and about 18% of Black voters indicated they would vote for Trump in the 2024 presidential election, according to a May Pew Research Center report.

NABJ fact-checking

In an email to members Wednesday morning, Lemon stressed that the organization’s invitation was not an endorsement and that there would be live fact-checking from PolitiFact during the session. Members who attended were not allowed to ask questions.

“While we acknowledge the concerns expressed by our members, we believe it is important for us to provide our members with the opportunity to hear directly from candidates and hold them accountable,” Lemon said. “We also want to provide our members with the facts.”’

Nichelle Smith, an independent investigative journalist from Virginia, said after the panel that it was clear where Trump stood with the Black community.

“I thought he was horribly rude to Rachel Scott and I commend her and the other woman on the panel for not soft balling and asking hard questions out the gate because I doubt he has rarely been confronted with hard questions by Black women,” she said.

NABJ tradition

Inviting a presidential candidate during an election year is an NABJ tradition since 1976. Former presidents have attended and participated in either a press conference or other question-and-answer formats, such as George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Obama. In 2016, Hillary Clinton attended, but Trump, who was also invited, did not.

The announcement late Monday that Trump would show up caused a firestorm among NABJ members. Karen Attiah, a columnist with the Washington Post, resigned from her position as NABJ Convention Co-chair.

“While my decision was influenced by a variety of factors, I was not involved or consulted with in any way with the decision to platform Trump in such a format,” Attiah, who was the 2019 NABJ Journalist of the Year, said.

April Ryan, a White House correspondent for TheGrio, a media company geared toward Black Americans, and NABJ’s 2017 Journalist of the Year, objected to the session in a social media post.

“The reports of attacks on Black women White House correspondents by the then president of the United States are not myth or conjecture, but fact,” she said.

During his first term, Trump often sparred with the White House press corps, but he was particularly harsh when it came to Black women journalists, such as Ryan, Abby Phillip from CNN and Yamiche Alcindor, a White House correspondent for PBS.

Ryan, who typically bore the brunt of those attacks, said the decision to hold a panel with Trump was “a slap in the face to the Black women journalists … who had to protect themselves from the wrath of this Republican presidential nominee who is promoting an authoritarian agenda that plans to destroy this nation and her democracy with his Project 2025.”

Editorial Director of Epicenter NYC Femi Redwood, who chairs NABJ’s LGBTQ+ task force, wrote …

Elon Musk Blames Cyberattack for Donald Trump Webchat Calamity

August 13, 2024

A much-anticipated online conversation between the world’s richest man and a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America had its start time disrupted for nearly an hour by a cyberattack.

That’s according to owner of X, previously Twitter, Elon Musk. Hosting the chat with 45th president Donald Trump on his social platform’s Spaces tool, the billionaire put the embarrassing delay down to a “massive DDOS attack”.

The conversation would ultimately last for more than two hours, with Musk and Trump discussing topics ranging from the latter’s presidency race with Vice President Kamala Harris, last month’s failed assassination attempt, striking workers, and illegal immigration.

Verifying

Musk/Trump Conversation Tribulation

Musk had previously said that the event’s billing as a ‘conversation’ had been a deliberate choice of word, so that “people understand how [Trump] talks when it’s a conversation, rather than an interview”.

But anybody tuning in at the scheduled start time of 8pm ET on Monday were treated to 47 minutes of easy-listening muzak and an additional seven minutes of silence before Musk eventually introduced the chat.

Surfshark logo🔎 Want to browse the web privately? 🌎 Or appear as if you’re in another country?

In that period, Musk posted on X that the issues had been caused by a massive DDOS attack on the platform – a claim he reiterated at the beginning of the conversation – and that his team were working on shutting down the problem.

He also said that they had “tested the system with 8 million concurrent listeners” earlier in the day.

A few hours after the conclusion of the exchange, a post from X on the platform said that the Space had received 73 million views and that “there were 4 million posts about Elon Musk and President Trump’s conversation on X, generating a total of 998 million views”.

“Combined views of the conversation with [Donald Trump] and subsequent discussion by other accounts now ~1 billion” – Elon Musk on X

What is a DDOS Attack?

A DDoS – or distributed denial-of-service – attack is a malicious online attempt to massively inflate the amount of traffic going to a server or network and, thus, overwhelm it to the point where it can’t function properly.

The targeted site or infrastructure becomes so saturated with requests that it effectively renders it unusable. To put it another way, the server crashes.

Unlike cyberattacks such as ransomware or data breaches, the bad actor doesn’t necessarily aim to financially gain from the threat (although, in some cases, they can be used to blackmail the victim).

The end goal is more usually intended to disrupt the target. In this case, it seems safe to assume that the humiliation of Musk and Trump was probably the main reason for the DDoD attack.

It isn’t the first (and won’t be the last) time that a major organization has been the target of DDoS attacks. ChatGPT owner OpenAI was attacked at the end of last year, while Microsoft and Google halted the “largest” cyberattack on record in October. Even the UK’s Royal family aren’t immune – its website , “royal.uk,” went down after an apparent DDOS attack.

Theo Von Talks to Donald Trump About Kamala Harris, Lil Jon & Chick-Fil-A | What are We Doing #155

August 23, 2024
Duration: 01:20:19

Hey, it’s Levi, your favorite podcast host back at it again with another episode of "What Are We Doing?" And let me tell you, this one’s a doozy. So, picture this: Theo Von, the stand-up comedian who can turn any conversation into a circus, somehow ended up interviewing none other than Donald Trump. Yeah, that Donald Trump. The two of them sat down at Trump’s golf club in New Jersey—because where else would you have a casual chat about addiction and the 2024 election?

In what can only be described as a surreal mix of reality TV and a fever dream, Trump decided to ask Theo about his history with cocaine and alcohol. Because when you’re the former leader of the free world, that’s the natural direction for a conversation to take, right? Anyway, Trump, who’s apparently never touched a drop of alcohol or a single cigarette in his life (make of that what you will), shared a bit about his older brother, Fred Trump Jr., who struggled with alcoholism and passed away in 1981. Trump’s life advice? "No drugs, no drinking, no cigarettes." And if you’re thinking that sounds like a recipe for a very dull Saturday night, well, I’m with you.

Theo, being Theo, didn’t shy away from the topic and laid it all out there—he’s in recovery from drug and alcohol use. And of course, Trump, with his trademark subtlety, asked Theo if cocaine is a "stronger up" than alcohol. You can’t make this stuff up. Theo’s response? "Cocaine will turn you into a damn owl, homie, you know what I’m saying? You’ll be out on your own porch, you’ll be your own streetlamp." And honestly, I don’t know if I’m more impressed with the description or concerned that it’s probably accurate.

But the episode wasn’t just about who’s been on what substance. Trump, never one to miss an opportunity to talk politics, dove into a whole range of topics, from healthcare to the 2024 election, and of course, threw in a few jabs at Biden and Kamala Harris. Speaking of Harris, she’s been on a bit of a tear lately, and it’s got the Trump camp shaking in their boots. After her speech at the Democratic National Convention, it’s looking like she might just be the candidate of change that voters are craving—or at least that’s what the headlines are saying. Is Trump worried? Probably. Should he be? That’s for you to decide.

And just when you thought this episode couldn’t get any weirder, Chick-Fil-A decided they wanted a piece of the entertainment pie. Yep, the chicken sandwich empire is launching its own streaming platform. Because when you think "entertainment," naturally your mind goes straight to fast food, right? They’re cooking up (pun intended) some family-friendly content, including a game show, because who doesn’t want to watch contestants try to win prizes while craving waffle fries?

So, there you have it. We’ve got Trump, Theo Von, cocaine stories, and Chick-Fil-A’s Hollywood ambitions all wrapped up in one wild episode. If you’re here for the laughs, the political hot takes, or just to see how absurd things can get, you’re in the right place. Buckle up, because this episode is one crazy ride. Let’s get into it!

Trump, Vance attack Harris on Afghanistan exit, foreign policy at North Carolina event

August 21, 2024

ASHEBORO — The members of the Republican presidential ticket criticized Vice President Kamala Harris over the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and America’s place on the world stage during a visit to Asheboro on Wednesday.

The event, which took place outside the North Carolina Aviation Museum, marked former President Donald Trump’s first outdoor campaign event since an attempted assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania last month. It was also U.S. Sen. JD Vance’s first visit to the state since being tapped as the GOP vice presidential nominee.

With bulletproof glass at his front and back and flanked by snipers on neighboring rooftops, Trump attacked his opponent and the Biden-Harris administration, chiefly on the military and foreign policy.

He returned multiple times to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, in which 13 service members were killed during an evacuation in Kabul.

“Since the Afghanistan catastrophe, it’s been open season on America and their allies,” Trump said.

His remarks were billed as focusing on national security, part of a series of speeches intended to focus on policy. He visited North Carolina last week for a speech that was supposed to focus on his economic agenda but often veered into personal attacks and asides on other issues and people.

Such was the case again Wednesday, with Trump again expressing skepticism at the idea of a policy-centric speech.

“My advisors are fired,” he joked, after polling the audience on whether they thought he should “get personal.” “We love to keep it on policy, but sometimes it’s hard when you’re attacked on all ends. They want to put you in jail for nothing.”

Among those with whom he “got personal” were military generals who since his presidency have spoken out against him, including Retired General Mark Milley and former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.

“I call them television generals,” Trump said.

At a July campaign event in Charlotte, Trump suggested replacing some military leaders with NASCAR drivers to guide the troops because they “win so many races.”

And he continued to mock Biden and Harris as “stupid people,” warning supporters that her election would bring “a third world war.”

During his speech, he welcomed on stage a group of North Carolina sheriffs and Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who earlier Wednesday held a press conference about the gubernatorial candidate’s public safety agenda in Statesville.

Vance, in first NC speech, mocks Harris’ intelligence and goes after Walz

Vance, in his remarks prior to Trump, portrayed the issues of crime and immigration as key to national security. And he mocked Harris’ understanding of foreign policy, saying she explained it “like a third grader who didn’t study for a class presentation.”

“You’re going to lose about 20 IQ points when you hear her talk about Russia-Ukraine,” Vance said. “She doesn’t know what the hell she’s talking about.”

He went after the opposing vice presidential nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz — echoing Republican claims that he has misrepresented his military service and mocking “his bizarre love affair with China.”

“I didn’t expect (Harris) to outsource the selection of her running mate, too,” Vance said, in a joke about U.S.-based jobs being outsourced abroad.

And he touted Trump’s methods on the world stage — calling him “too big for the deep state bureaucracy.”

“Mean tweets and world peace has a pretty nice ring to it,” Vance said. “I think we ought to bring it right back.”

With convention in progress, Democrats attack Trump on economy

Harris, who set out her economic agenda in Raleigh last week, is in Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention.

Her campaign has repeatedly attacked Trump’s domestic and economic agenda by highlighting the conservative policy blueprint Project 2025. Local Democrats held a press conference Wednesday in Asheboro saying the agenda would raise inflation and taxes on North Carolinians.

Harris will officially accept the Democratic nomination this week in Chicago.

Relish being the outsider – Donald Trump

August 23, 2024
Duration: 00:02:51

Donald Trump delivers a passionate speech addressing the broken system in Washington and urging individuals to take control of their own beliefs and actions. He criticizes a small group of so-called experts who try to dictate how others should live, think, and act. Trump emphasizes the importance of self-reliance, especially when one is confident in their own convictions.

He encourages people to actively pursue their hopes and dreams, drawing on historical examples like the pilgrims praying upon landing at Plymouth and the founders invoking God in the Declaration of Independence. Trump underscores the principle that in America, the people worship God, not the government.

Acknowledging that nothing worth doing comes easy, Trump stresses the necessity of facing criticism and opposition with courage. He advises treating the word "impossible" as a motivator and relishing the role of the outsider, as it is the outsiders who bring about significant change. Trump recounts witnessing brilliant individuals who gave up, contrasted with less talented individuals who succeeded through sheer perseverance.

His message is clear: never stop fighting for what you believe in and for those who care about you. Trump calls for carrying oneself with dignity and pride, demanding the best from oneself, and being unafraid to challenge established interests. This relentless pursuit of one's convictions, he believes, is what ultimately leads to real and lasting success.
